Rays Update

Posted on: May 29, 2009 12:10 am

The Rays continue to disappoint, losing their fifth in a row today, after it looked like they might be catching fire by winning three straight. They dropped to 23-27 after a 2-1 loss to the Indians today, and are currently tied for last in the American League East, at six games back of the Red Sox. I wouldn't say anyone in the Rays organization has been particularly pleased with this season so far, especially after winning the American League pennant last year and losing in the World Series to the Philies. They have been shook with a fair share of injuries, but that can't be the excuse. SP Scott Kazmir, SS Jason Bartlett, DH Pat Burrell, 2B Akinori Iwamura, among others are currently on the DL. Just a few days ago, the Rays blew a 10 run lead to the Indians, one of the worst teams in baseball. At the beginning of the year, the Rays were probably favored to win the AL East or at least make the Wild Card. Now I wouldn't be surprised if they are favored for last place in their division.

In some better Rays news, Evan Longoria continues to play well, batting .326 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI. He is following up his Rookie of the Year performance last year with MVP type numbers for a bad team. Its bad for him because it is seeming more and more like the Rays were a one year mirage and now its over. He is a great player that would have even better stats with a better team. It seems his immense talent is being wasted right now, but I can only hope he continues a great season and maybe can pick up his team somewhere along the line.

The Rays open up a 3 game set at Tropicana Field tomorrow against the Twins before a day off and another 3 game series at home against the Royals before they fly up to New York to face the Yankees.
